Jan. 1648/9 The King was permitted to see his Children whilst Prisoner at Hampton Court, & likewise at St. James’s when he was confin’d there wch. oppertunities he employ’d in giving them such Advice as he thought might be of use to them after his Decease. He advis’d ye Duke of York to make his Escape to Holland to his Sister ye Princess of Orange. The last time of his seeing them, he commandd. Princess Eliz. never to marry without ye Consent of ye Queen & her Elder Brother &c. & gave her several things in Charge wch. he bid her tell her Mother & among the rest that his thoughts had never Stray’d from her & that his love shou’d be the same to ye last; but said he doubted her Remembrance of them, at wch. words wth. abundance of tears, She promis’d to write down the perticulars; then holding the Duke of Glocester between his Knees, He told him, Child they will now Cut off thy Fathers head & make thee a King, but mark what I say You must not be King as long as yr. Brothers are alive, for they will Cut off Yr. Brothers heads when they can catch ‘em & cut off thy head to al last thereupon I charge You do not be made a K. by them, at wch. the /child sighing said I will be torn in pieces first; which falling from one so young exceedingly pleas’d the King. [French Translation]
